aMSN 0.97
Synaptic: amsn
After installation, start the application from Applications > Internet > aMSN
To add aMSN to Startup, go System > Preferences > Sessions > Startup Programs. Add a new item, with command “/usr/share/amsn/amsn”.
SCIM Chinese
Go System > Administration > Language Support. Choose “Chinese”, and hit Apply. Make sure you “Enable support to enter complex characters”. Logout and login again. Test SCIM Chinese in Text Editor and Firefox.
The resource provides you several solutions if the basic steps doesn’t work for you. It also tells you how you can do aMSN with SCIM.

Compiz
Synaptic: compizconfig-settings-manager
After installation, configure it at System > Preferences > Advanced Desktop Effects Settings. I didn’t have any gfx driver issue, unlike what was described as needing a proprietary driver.
I restored my desktop cube with 4 workspaces, a photo on top of the cube, wobbly windows, and I can draw fire now. Water still doesn’t work for me. I believe its the gfx card.

Java
Synaptic: sun-java6-jdk
This includes both the JDK and JRE. After installation the tricky part is to make it work as a browser plugin. I had to go dirty with the terminal for this one.
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so /usr/lib/firefox-3.0/plugins/libjavaplugin_oji.so
Once you linked that, type “about:plugins” in your browser to verify the Java plugin. Tools > Add-ons should also list Java as one of the add-ons.

Adobe Flash Player
Surprisingly, the Plugin Finder Service in FF3 in Hardy actually works. It listed 3 available plugins to view the Flash object in the web page. I chose the Adobe version and the installation went through Synaptic successfully. Just had to restart the browser to make it show up.
